We have tried to make a distinction between current and historical brands of pianos to help organize the information. The line is not distinct however as some brand names from the past have later reappeared in one way or another. When this is the case we try to clarify the brand’s current situation as well as the path it traveled to get to where it is now from earlier times. For more on the use of historical piano names by a later company see Stencils and Other Tricky Piano Names.
Also note this is an alphabetical list of piano brand names, not manufacturers or brand owners, for the simple reasons that:
- A piano will generally be known by its brand name, not the name of the manufacturer or owner (although they may be the same)
- A piano manufacturer may produce more than one brand name
- A piano brand name may change ownership, changing who manufactures it
- A piano brand owner may switch manufacturers
